CHAPTER FOURTEEN

I WAS reluctant to leave the treehouse hotel. I’d never woken up so rested, and so at peace with myself. Nate had been beside me, all naked and warm, and I clung to him, never wanting to leave this spot. It had been difficult, but eventually Nate convinced me to get out of bed and haul my ass down to the car with promises of blueberry pancakes and bacon. I was starving after the late night before, and I couldn’t resist the temptation of sugary, fatty, breakfast food.

It took less than three hours, including a quick stop at a greasy spoon diner for breakfast, to get to Portland. The city was unlike anywhere I’d been before. The color and the history and the modern all melded together into a hip and quirky place. I felt instantly at home. I imagined Portland was where anyone could truly be themselves, and no one would ever be judged for the way they were. It left me with the impression that Nate and I could have spent the entire month in this one city and never run out of new things to see and do.

As it was, we only had a day or two there, and I vowed that we would come back together and give this city the time and attention it deserved.

“What’s up first?” I asked.

Nate handed me the envelope without saying a word. I knew the drill by now.

Tearing it open with gusto, I read out loud, bouncing with excitement as I did.

#11: Learn to Brew Beer

If there was one thing Nate and I had in common, it was our love of beer, especially craft beer. Okay, so Nate and I had about a billion things in common, but beer ranked right up near the top of the list.

“Today?” I demanded, my back stick straight as I waited for his answer.

“Yes.”

“Now?”

Nate laughed. “There’s that infinite patience of yours again.”

“What the fuck ever,” I countered. “It’s not like ten in the morning is obscenely early to start drinking.”

“I don’t think the brewery is even open yet.”

“Fine,” I huffed with fake exasperation. “I guess I can wait a little longer.”

“It won’t be that much longer, Finn. Let’s get checked into our hotel, and then we can head over.”
